August 12, 2013 (Jackson, Miss.) - Mississippi Cable Telecommunications Association recently sponsored a National 811 Day run/walk hosted by the Mississippi Damage Prevention Council. The event was designed to bring awareness to the importance of calling 811.
Public Service Commissioner Lynn Posey said "National 811 Day is a reminder to citizens to obey the law and take precaution by calling 811 prior to any digging project. I encourage the community to take part in the race this Saturday and help educate others about the 811 law."
Mississippians are connected to a local call center when calling 811. 811 notifies appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested site to mark the appropriate locations of underground lines using flags and spray paint.
